Hello, my name is Nerisa Pampilo, a PreK – 5th School Media Coordinator at Aurelian Springs Institute of Global Learning here in Halifax County Public Schools, North Carolina. Culture is a way of life. It speaks about one’s identity, background and all of the person’s unique attributes. Being an Asian educator had widened our students’ understanding and outlook about other people in the world who have their own ways, personality, strengths, and weaknesses. They learned about cultural diversity and broaden their outlook and mindset of things and expectations toward people. As an international educator, it was my first challenge first to be accepted and respected as an educator and even as a different and unique individual. I have to prove my worth or value as a person and I also have the need to be accepted and respected so on my end it is easy for me to understand my students’ differences holistically because I have to look at them as my own challenge. Being a person who values education more as a priceless possession or treasure that nobody can take it away from us. I also tend to expect my students to think the same way as I do as my culture. So, this is my motivation and inspiration to keep on teaching my students to understand that people around the world had their different and or diverse culture and traditions that speak for themselves and the country they live in. Teacher's Reflection This activity was definitely a learning experience for my students to know, investigate further and dig deeper so they can freely uncover their personal identity. And for me to see to it that the students will understand better about their cultural heritage or cultural background aside from just knowing their race. I came to realize that the students still have to be taught over and over about their roots, family, perception, and practices at home, in school or anywhere that wherever they are, they are always representing their own identity or cultural upbringing as a person or an individual with dignity regardless of color or race. They have to accept themselves as a unique person with different talents and abilities, strength and weakness as well to be able to understand other people's culture and traditions. Notifications
Congratulations I have awarded you a badge for your hard work! Thanks for all you do and please continue to mold and inspire these young minds. I love how your activities and lesson lends itself to support student inquiry by allowing students to be engaged in an investigation to dig deeper into their lives so that they can 'freely uncover their personal identity.' Good job. I can see that you hold high expectations for your students. keep up the amazing job that you are doing and I especially like how you utilized yourself as an example to prove your worth or value as a person and express the desire to be accepted and respected so that you will be able to understand your students’ differences holistically. I really like how you helped students to become aware of 'cultural diversity and broaden their outlook and mindset of things and expectations toward people.' This will definitely promote empathy and help students to develop a sense of respect and appreciation for each individual. They will further realize that each person is unique and special in their own way. Based on students' work 'My Cultural Heritage' it was evident that students got the opportunity to learn more about their own culture and also become more aware of where their parents originated from. This will subsequently help them to develop intercultural awareness, knowledge and understanding and also improve self awareness. This lesson and activity was indeed relevant to students' lives, aligned to competences and centered around a concept. Students will be able to conduct an introspection into their lives and think about how their culture relates to how they live and conduct themselves in today's society. I used the link below that you sent to view your work. I was able to see students' work and teacher reflection.http://participatelearning.wikispaces.com/Global+Classroom+-+Students+Work+and+Reflections Hi Nerisa Pampilo!
